Dignity of Risk

Movie Opportunity | Dignity of Risk | COPACC

A terrific opportunity exists this Monday (August 19) to view this award winning short film ‘Dignity of Risk’ in Colac.

Prof Joe, a geriatrician, is faced with a difficult decision when he finds that his elderly patient, Mr Jones, can no longer live safely at home.  He decides to put Mr Jones in a care-home to protect him from all the risks around him, but soon finds himself uneasy about his decision.

Dignity of Risk is a 15min short film/documentary featuring an encounter between Prof Joe and a patient, Mr Jones, who has recently been diagnosed with dementia.  The film raises questions relating to either protecting Mr Jones from harm vs intruding on his choices to enjoy his life.

Following the screening, Prof Joe will deliver an informal lecture with opportunity for questions from the audience to explore the notion of dignity of risk, how living with the impact of dementia is constructed and the complex interplay between individual, family and organisations when managing risk.

The film won “Best Narrative Film Category” at the 2017 Global Impact Film Festival (GIDC), a dynamic independent film festival in Washington DC, USA.  The festival’s mission is to empower lives by celebrating the power of media for social justice by showcasing films that provoke and inspire social change.   The film also won laurels at six other international festivals including the United Nations Association Festival.

This screening is presented by Colac Area Health, with support from local area health authorities.
