TDHS Statement re Health Services Plan (September 2024)The Victorian Government have recently released the Health Services Plan (the Plan), which will see public health services grouped into geographic regions, to be known as Local Health Service Networks (LHSN). Importantly the Plan does not include forced mergers or amalgamations.The following information about these networks is known.§ Each health service maintains its own Board and CEO/Leadership team.§ Individual Health Services retain their own identity.§ Current services and staff are maintained.§ The goal of the LHSN is that we collaborate and share resources more efficiently to improve health outcomes for regional consumers, including TDHS consumers.§ LHSN will replace the regionally based partnerships formerly known as Health Services Partnerships, under which TDHS currently has beneficial partnerships with our neighbouring health services.Whilst we await details regarding the Plan, TDHS’s Board and Executive will continue to advocate for the best interests of our community and provide feedback to the Government regarding LHSN configuration and decision-making frameworks. In July 2023, the Victorian Department of Health commissioned an Expert Advisory Committee to examine the design and governance of Victoria’s health services system. As part of this, the Committee developed the Health Services Plan, which provided a number of recommendations with the aim of a more connected system that delivers the right care, at the right time, in the right place for all Victorians.It has been on the public record, in a statement from our Board Chair Frank Carlus on 31 May, that Timboon and District Healthcare Service (TDHS) has identified a strong preference for strengthened partnerships and the retention of local governance and has communicated our position to the Minister for Health and our local government Members of Parliament – www.timboonhealthcare.com.au/health-service-system-update/The Government has announced today that it accepted 26 of 27 recommendations proposed by the Expert Advisory Committee. The Government will deliver several key reforms in response to these recommendations. A new case of measles has been reported in Victoria in a returned overseas traveller.Measles is a highly infectious viral illness that can spread from person-to-person and potentially lead to serious health complications.People who have attended the listed exposure sites during the specified dates and times should monitor for symptoms of measles. There are multiple locations identified across Victoria, however the four exposure locations and times for the Barwon South West are:-Tuesday 25 June 11:00am to 12:00noonColes, Corner of Bromfield Street and Queen Street, Colac, VIC, 3250 -Wednesday 26 June 3:00pm to 3:50pm Toyworld Warrnambool, Timor St Warrnambool 3280-Thursday 27 June 11:00am to 11:40am -Friendly Grocer, 23 Lord St, Port Campbell 3269 -Friday 28 June 5:00pm to 7:00pm Port Campbell Hotel, 40 Lord St, Port Campbell 3269-Friday 28 June 6:30pm to 7:30pm Friendly Grocer, 23 Lord St, Port Campbell 3269 Anyone who develops symptoms of measles should seek medical care. Call the health service beforehand to advise that you may have been exposed to measles and wear a mask.Symptoms of measles include:-fever-cough-sore or red eyes (conjunctivitis)-runny nose-feeling generally unwell-followed by a red rash.It can take up to 18 days for symptoms to develop after exposure. So it's important for people who visited these locations to look out for symptoms up until 18 days from exposure.Initial symptoms of measles may be similar to those of COVID-19 and influenza. If a symptomatic person tests negative for COVID-19 and/or influenza but develops a rash, they should be advised to continue isolating and be tested for measles.We want to remind the community to make sure they are up to date with their vaccinations. The measles vaccine can prevent the disease even after exposure, if given early enough.This should be a reminder for everyone to check that they are protected against measles, which is highly infectious.The MMR vaccine is available in Victoria for free:• on the National Immunisation Program, routinely given at 12 months and 18 months of age.• for anyone born during or after 1966 who have not already received two doses of measles-containing vaccine, are unsure of their vaccination status, or do not have evidence of immunity to measles.• for young infants aged 6 to 12 months prior to overseas travel to countries where measles is endemic or where outbreaks of measles are occurring. Cancer touches us all in one way or another and a big thank you to the Timboon Rail trailers for raising awareness and important funds for cancer research during their Biggest Morning Tea held at Timboon and District Healthcare Service yesterday.It was tea-riffic to see community members getting together enjoying a lovely cuppa and home-made treats, as cancer journeys were shared with tears and laughter and positivity and gratefulness filled the room. Over $2000 was raised for cancer research, support, and prevention; what an amazing effort!Investment in research has helped increase survival rates from 49% in the 1980s to 69% today.
